What Did We Upgrade for the Season 2018?
Everything should be ready for this season! Ospreys will arrive during the following weeks. Now it’s the time when everything should work without any maintenance for the next five months.
We made substantial investments in our infrastructures. All of the three ospreys nest have additional solar and battery power and everything can be remotely controlled. From technological perspective, these setups are mainly identical except some unique features in our primary nest. This is the nest, where Alma and Ossi nested last year. The upgrades are briefly described below.

Upgrades for the Primary Nest (Satakunta Osprey 1)
Several followers questioned fish sizes delivered by Ossi last year. We started to discuss how this question could be answered. How could we get it on a scale around the nest? Few months went by with us thinking of the solution. We realized that the Martta, Jussi and Suoma used our camera box as their kitchen table! Sometimes Ossi was on it too. This was our starting point, when we started to make a custom network connected scale embedded in the roof.
#1 An Embedded and Network Connected Scale
The scale definitely was not easy to setup and is mainly experimental due the variable weather conditions. The scale will give random values when there is, e.g., heavy wind, but it works greatly when there is actually weight on the roof! As shown in the following pictures, a basic kitchen scale was modified for this use.
The camera box got a new roof now with the embedded scale. We are very eager to see, if they actually stand on it and the scale gives us real-time data. Hopefully it works the whole season, even though this for sure is the most sensitive equipment in our installation.
#2 Panorama Camera for Sky Actions
Our main camera is not a fisheye, thus it shows only one limited perspective of the actions at the nest. This is the reason we are also experimenting a panorama camera to see what is happening above the nest. It might not be very sharp, but hopefully it gives us better overall perspective. Panorama camera is on during days, but it will not be public right away. It requires software development from our side 🙂
#3 Weather Sensors
We are also collecting temperature and humidity data and will publish it on the live page. Unfortunately we did not have time to install a rain sensor.
Good luck to ospreys!
